Development of Mineral Deposits
The Development of Mineral Deposits at Abylkas Saginov Karaganda Technical University prepares specialists for mining, oil and gas, underground construction, design and research organisations. It offers education at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels.
Students learn to select extraction technologies, design production processes, assess rock mass conditions and maintain operational safety. The programmes combine engineering calculations, digital modelling, practical training and research.
Bachelor’s programmes
Graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Engineering and Technology degree.
6B07202 Mining
The programme prepares students for surface and underground mining of coal and ore deposits. It covers mine access and development, mining methods, drilling and blasting, equipment selection and production planning. Students develop skills in computer modelling of mineral deposits, geographic information systems and digital design using building information modelling (BIM).
Career areas. Underground mines, open pits, mining companies and design organisations; mine planning, coordination of mining operations, engineering calculations and production control.
6B07203 Oil and Gas Engineering
The programme prepares students to work with drilling, production, gathering, treatment, transportation and storage of oil and gas. Students learn to perform engineering calculations, operate well, pipeline and storage equipment, use technical documentation and maintain safe production processes.
Career areas. Oil and gas producers, service companies, pipeline operators, oil depots and gas storage facilities.
6B07207 Construction of Mining Enterprises and Underground Structures
The programme prepares students to design, construct and operate underground facilities. It covers mine excavation and support, construction methods, mining equipment and work planning under different geological and mining conditions. Students learn to calculate structural and operational parameters, select engineering solutions and prepare design documentation.
Career areas. Mining construction companies, mine operators and design organisations; construction and reconstruction of mines and underground structures.
Master’s programmes
The 7M07203 Mining programme offers two study tracks.
| Study track | Duration | Degree awarded |
| Research and teaching | 2 years | Master of Technical Sciences |
| Professional | 1.5 years | Master of Engineering and Technology |
The research and teaching track prepares graduates for research, engineering and teaching roles. It covers research methods, higher education pedagogy, numerical modelling, geomechanics and industrial safety, and includes teaching and research placements.
The professional track focuses on production challenges and technical management. It covers computer-aided design, geomechanical modelling, maintenance of mine workings, ventilation and methane safety. Students learn to justify technological decisions in terms of efficiency and safety.
Doctoral programmes
8D07202 Mining
This research and teaching programme leads to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Doctoral students study research methods, geomechanics, numerical modelling and research project management. The programme prepares graduates to conduct independent research, develop technologies and to teach at a university.
8D07205 Mining Engineering
This professional doctoral programme leads to a professional doctorate and focuses on applied research and engineering challenges in mining. It covers resource-efficient geotechnologies, research project management and environmental, social and governance (ESG) approaches to enterprise operations.
Practical training and professional development
Depending on the programme, students undertake introductory, industrial, pre-graduation, research or teaching placements. Practical assignments and projects develop skills in engineering calculations, data analysis, technical documentation and the justification of engineering decisions. As their qualifications and experience develop, graduates can pursue engineering, design, management, research and teaching careers.
