From July 21 to 22, an international seminar was held in Astana, organized by the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) in collaboration with the Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The event focused on effective regulation of coal mine methane emissions, improving industrial safety, and implementing international practices in Kazakhstan’s coal industry to minimize climate and production-related risks.
The seminar brought together representatives of international organizations, government bodies, scientific institutions, and coal mining enterprises. Among them were representatives from Abylkas Saginov Karaganda Technical University — research staff of the Methane Energy Laboratory and the Development of Mineral Deposits Department.
PhD and head of the laboratory Denis Akhmatnurov, as well as PhDs and associate professors of the DMDD Department — Ravil Musin and Nail Zamaliyev — presented a report titled:
“Innovative Approaches to Coal Seam Degasification and Gas Content Assessment in the Conditions of the Karaganda Coal Basin.”
The report highlighted the results of applied and field research conducted as part of a scientific project aimed at reducing the risk of sudden methane outbursts, improving degasification efficiency, modeling geomechanical and geodynamic processes, and utilizing coal mine methane for energy purposes.
The comprehensive presentation received high praise from the seminar participants.
