On October 6, 2025, an offline session of the international program “Education and Climate Change Adaptation” was held at the Ecological Museum of Karaganda, organized by the Center for Sustainable Development of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
The event took place within the framework of the global project IKI “Dialogue on Climate Policy and Knowledge Management” (DIAPOL-CE), which aims to promote systematic approaches toward building a sustainable and climate-resilient economy.
The Karaganda session focused on the regional context of Central Kazakhstan, addressing adaptation to climate change in urban planning, construction, and industry—areas of key importance for the country’s industrial hub.
Our university was represented at the session by:
O.A. Shebalina and A.R. Apakasheva, staff of the Center for Sustainable Development;
B.B. Akhmetov, Head of the Department of Architecture and Design;
N.K. Tsoi and E.A. Tseskovskaya, lecturers of the Department of Industrial Safety and Ecology.
The participants proposed project ideas aimed at aligning the university’s scientific research with the needs of regional industries, as well as enhancing urban infrastructure resilience, preserving biodiversity, and developing alternative energy sources.
The presented initiatives reflect a commitment to integrating the principles of sustainable development into applied science, architectural design, environmental engineering, and industrial safety.
The session was moderated by N. Bachinskaya, a sustainability consultant. The program included an interactive climate risk assessment exercise based on the TCFD methodology, allowing participants to identify sectoral vulnerabilities and propose adaptation measures.
This series of sessions, held in Astana, Almaty, and Karaganda, aims to strengthen cooperation and knowledge exchange among universities, enterprises, and government agencies. As a result, up to six pilot projects will be developed to contribute to the implementation of the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan of Kazakhstan.
