Saginov Technical University hosted a seminar focused on effective preparation of grant applications for research funding. The event addressed approaches to presenting research projects effectively, substantiating their novelty and practical significance, and developing competitive proposals capable of attracting the attention of experts and evaluation committee members.
The seminar was delivered by Professor Dr Khairur Rijal from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). In his presentation, the scholar emphasized the importance of viewing a grant proposal not only as a research project but also as a strategic presentation designed to convincingly demonstrate the project’s value to experts and members of the evaluation committee.
According to the expert, a strong grant proposal should be built around four key elements: clear research objectives, existing technological limitations, demonstrated novelty, and potential risks. In this regard, researchers were encouraged not to focus solely on identifying a gap in the scientific literature, but rather to begin by defining a relevant real-world problem and demonstrating the significance of the proposed research in addressing it.
The seminar also placed particular emphasis on the soundness of research methodology and the feasibility of the project. Each selected analytical approach should be properly justified and able to withstand potential critical questions from experts.
In addition, the participants discussed how to clearly define the expected outcomes and long-term impact of a research project. It was emphasized that researchers should distinguish between direct outputs, such as scientific publications and datasets, and long-term impacts, including policy changes or tangible benefits for society.
At the conclusion of the seminar, researchers were advised to prepare the abstract of their grant proposal at the final stage of the writing process, seek critical feedback from colleagues before submission, and view expert feedback as an opportunity to further improve their projects.
The event provided researchers with practical guidance on effectively presenting scientific ideas, aligning research projects with the strategic priorities of funding organizations, and developing competitive grant proposals.
