In order to improve the level of knowledge of English and German languages, to popularize a foreign language among students, to instill an interest in learning the language, and also to the culture of countries for which these languages are interethnic. On February 12-16, 2018, the Languages Department of Karaganda State Technical University conducted a language Olympiad in the framework of the implementation of the concept of multilingual education in KSTU for 2017-2020, dedicated to the 65th anniversary of KSTU.
The introduction of a multilingual educational system into the educational process at all levels from school to universities is today a pledge and guarantor of the formation of a competitive and multicultural personality, owning several languages, striving for self-development and self-improvement.
Particular attention was paid to the identification of the level of speech competence, the disclosure of leadership qualities of young people. To this end, the protection of TED projects “Technology, Entertainment, Design” (Technologies, Entertainment, Design) was organized.
The Olympiad was held in 3 rounds:
The first round of the Olympiad consisted of assignments for listening and reading. The students were given no more than 90 minutes to complete the tasks. The buildings were constructed according to the requirements of IELTS.
To participate in the next round, participants of the Olympiad needed to score at least 45 points. Of the 106 students who took part in the 1st round, 18 people passed in the second round.
In the II round, students were offered an essay where they needed to express their point of view (Iagree / disagreecompletely / partly). When going into the next round, creativity, originality, balanced content, clarity of the above thoughts and the absence of gross grammatical errors were taken into account.
The participants of the III round were the 10 strongest contestants, who struck the Olympiad jury with creative ideas, enthusiasm and, of course, a brilliant mastery of a foreign language. This tour was held in the format of the TED Talks platform. Within 5 minutes, students who defended their project showed a high level of speaking skills, originality of the material, originality and creativity of the topic. The textual material was accompanied by slides, presentation and music.
