International practical conference “Scientific Innovation and Entrepreneurship”

November 22, 2017 in Karaganda State Technical University was an international practical conference “Scientific Innovation and Entrepreneurship” in English, organized by teachers of the Department of Foreign Languages. The head of the conference was the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages of KSTU, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences (PhD), assistant professor D.D. Jantassova.

This conference was held with the aim of developing international relations of young scientists, increasing the level of proficiency in vocational and technical English, supporting young scientists in overcoming the language barrier and acquiring language skills, as well as discussing problems and prospects, sharing experiences, practical skills and competencies in the field of science -engineering innovations and entrepreneurship.

Much attention was paid to the latest advanced technologies, as well as future research related to all areas of science and engineering, problems in the design, development and practical application of new technologies. This conference has become for young scientists a unique language platform for discussing the latest results and obtained experimental data in the field of technical sciences and the possibilities of commercializing their projects taking into account foreign business experience.

The total number of participants at the conference was 273 people (of them: 238 listeners, 35 speakers).

The conference was opened with a welcoming speech by the vice-rector for scientific work, Doctor of Technical Sciences Sergei Ozhigin, who warmly congratulated the head of the department of “Foreign Languages” and all of her team with conducting such a significant and relevant event among the undergraduates and doctoral students of KSTU, highlighting the relevance of English language new technologies, new industries, new economy.

After that, the head of the Department of Foreign Languages, Damira Dulatovna and the foreign scientist, Professor Constance Devereux, made a welcoming speech, thanked those present for their cognitive interest in research activities in the field of engineering and expressed the hope that the conference would become a bright event in the life of each participant of the conference and contribute the growth of activity in the study of English, the knowledge of which is extremely important for life in the modern world.

The participants of the conference discussed the results of design works in the field of such technical sciences as “Biomaterials and Biotechnologies”, “Chemical Engineering”, “Construction”, “Information Systems”, “Energy”, “Design and Development”, “Instrument-Making”, “Industrial Engineering “, “Material Science”,” Mechanical Engineering “,” Mining”,  “Telecommunications “,” Organization of the transportation of vehicles. ”

The format of the conference “Scientific Innovations and Entrepreneurship” differs from the official standard conferences in that the participants of the conference acted as the main speakers and acting persons of the conference. All speeches and discussions were conducted in English in such forms of presentation work as a demonstration with demonstrative examples, discussion groups, master classes, poster discussions.

During the registration, participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with modern materials on studying English in the field of engineering science in the framework of an organized exhibition of foreign educational centers, including Macmillan.

The conference was attended by Prof., PhD Daniel Churchill (University of Hong Kong), PhD Constance DeVereaux (University of Colorado, USA) and PhD Dylan Evans (UK), as well as practitioners from the United States: Ben Taylor (Humboldt State University), Jordan Bakke (University of Tennessee, Knoxville) and Todrich Estelle (State University of Texas), who conducted master classes on topical issues of becoming an international specialist, namely the development of the international profile of the young scientist, the theory of interval repeats in learning a foreign language, the theory of the method of Delphi, self-motivation and self-organization in achieving goals, etc.

It`s pleasant to note the high activity of young scientists wishing to participate in the conference. The speeches of the conference participants were distinguished by a variety of topics, relevance, informativeness and thus aroused great interest among the audience. It should be noted that presentations, demonstrations and posters were presented lively and interesting, sometimes surprising with their approach to certain problems.

At the closing of the conference, the results of the contest for the best presentation of undergraduates and doctoral candidates were summed up. The authors of the best works received valuable prizes and diplomas in the following categories: “Creative approach” – graduate student of the group AiUM-17-1 Saltanat Tolegen,, “Perfect English” – graduate student of the group TEM 17-2 Gulnur Okenova, “Diploma of 1st degree” -graduate student of the group ISM 17-2  Nurlybek Shinekenev, “2nd degree diploma” – graduate student of the group EEM 17-2 Magzhan Tazhikeev, “3rd degree diploma” – graduate student of the group ISM 17-2 Vyacheslav Tarenkov.

Interest was caused by the project devoted to the current topic “Internet of Things”, which was presented as a network concept where physical objects (things) are equipped with built-in technologies for interaction with each other or with the Internet. Within the framework of this work, an attempt is made to take advantage of the Internet’s capabilities of things in the transformation of various automation complexes, including the management of production processes.

Participants noted the relevance of this competition, where they have the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, skills and skills in their professional field in English. In this connection, the projects that have won prizes will be presented in one of the largest in the world competition in the field of scientific communication “Fame Lab”, where it will be necessary to explain to the general public the scientific concept in English in three minutes.

The atmosphere during the conference was friendly, conducive to conversation, encouraging discussion. All participants received certificates, as well as a lot of positive emotions and energy for future accomplishments. We believe that the practical conference in English will be held annually and will become a good tradition for the Department of Foreign Languages of the Karaganda State Technical University.
