Relevance: consists in the need to assess the effect of volcanogenic pyroclastic material on the formation of the geochemical background of rare elements in coal in order to use them as marker zones in correlation and identification of coal seams and a more detailed study of the conditions of their origin.

Project purpose is to study the mineralogical and geochemical features of pyroclastics in the Carboniferous coals and to evaluate the effect of pyroclastics on the content of rare metals as a source of rare metals.

Expected and achieved results:

To achieve the purpose of the project and the planned tasks, it is planned to obtain results that are different in content and volume.

The development of the project, the results of a comprehensive study of coals and clay interlayers will make it possible to determine and to develop criteria for their identification for correlation of coal seams of the Karaganda basin, and will also be necessary in the study of clay interlayers, as reservoir rocks-traps containing impurity elements, as well as REE for their further rational use.

Using the obtained analytical data of modern equipment and the latest methods, it is planned to build various types of geochemical and petrochemical modules. By means of interpreting mineralogical and geochemical materials, the effect of pyroclastic material on the concentration of impurity elements in coals and clay interlayers of the Karaganda coal basin will be determined; the concentration conditions and mineral associations of impurity elements in coals and clay interlayers will be established to determine the composition of primary pyroclastic material in tonsteins; geochemical features of coals and clayey rocks will be determined, as well as the lateral and vertical variability of the mineral and chemical composition of coals and clayey interlayers; regularities of the distribution of impurity elements, their mineral forms in coals and clay interlayers of the Karaganda basin will be established to identify composition-specific pyroclastic interlayers, which will make it possible to correlate the coal seams of the basin.

The results obtained will make it possible to use coal not only as a fuel and energy raw material but also as a mineral raw material with an abnormal content of impurity elements, including REE, which will increase the economic potential of coal.

In the period of June-August 2022, as part of the project, 300 samples of coal and clay interlayers were taken from the mines of the Karaganda coal basin: Saranskaya, Aktasskaya, n.a. Kuzembaev (sampling distance between the mines is about 2 km). The sampling was carried out laterally and vertically: in coal-bearing deposits, clay layers and their contact zones, the distance of which is from 50 to 200 m along the strike. The average sample weight is 2 kg. The sampling scheme has been drawn up. It was established that the coal seams and, accordingly, the clay interlayers were mature and lied at the dip angle of 16˚. In local areas, mudstone layers became looser and had poor soakability. The thickness of the clay interlayers was from 1.5 to 5 cm, they were sustained along the strike, the color is from beige to light gray.

The samples were sent for sample preparation, including the initial samples of argillite and coal processing with the use of a multi-stage crushing-attrition cycle, bringing particles up to 0.074 mm for samples weighing 2 kg, analytical powder – 50 to 100 g. Briquettes of samples for scanning electron microscopy were made in sizes ~ 1.5*1.5*2 cm.

The work is underway to determine the elemental composition of 85 samples of coals and clay interlayers using the ICP-MS method in the accredited laboratory of the Far East Geological Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Vladivostok, Russia), as well as the work to determine the chemical composition of clay interlayers. Clay layers were identified in mines by their specific characteristics: color, thickness, and lateral consistency. The selected samples were crushed to the powder state, with the particle size of 0.74 mm. The samples were also sent to the laboratory for results by the ICP-MS, ICP-OES methods.

In the period from September 21 to 25, 2022, the project executors A. Amangeldykyzy and G. Blyalova visited the Far Eastern Geological Institute of the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences on a working trip. They got acquainted with the Analytical Center of the Far Eastern Geological Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in order to carry out a complex of research works on the geochemistry of coals in Kazakhstan, visited the analytical laboratories of the Institute, the geological museum and the Central Scientific Library of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. At the meeting with the leadership of the Institute, they discussed the prospects for long-term cooperation.
