On February 12-16, 2018 the Department of foreign languages of the Karaganda state technical university holds the language olympiad within implementation of the Concept of multilingual education in KSTU for 2017-2020 devoted to 65-year anniversary of KSTU.
Nowadays introduction of multilingual system of teaching in educational process in all levels from school to universities is the key and the guarantee of formation of the competitive and multicultural personality possessing several languages, aiming at self-development and self-improvement.
The purpose of the olympiad is the improvement of English language level, promotion of a foreign language among students, fostering interest in studying the language, its features and structure, interlanguage communication and also the culture of the country for which this language is international.
The main objectives of the language olympiad are: assistance in increasing education level, development of mental and creative abilities of students and increasing motivation to further acquisition of English and improvement of all types of speech activity.
Within the language olympiad special attention will be paid to determination of speech competence level, revealing of youth leadership skills. For this purpose the presentation of TED–projects (Technology, Entertainment, Design) will be organized.
The language of the olympiad: English.
Category of the olympiad participants: students of the 1st-3rd courses of all specialties of KSTU.
Procedure and forms of the student’s olympiad in English
The olympiad consists of the next stages:
The 1st stage – listening and reading. Completion time – 90 minutes.
Listening – duration: 30 minutes. This block includes listening of 2 texts and accomplishment of 7 tasks to each text. Each audio track is recorded twice with a pause for 1 minute. After listening of each text 5-7 minutes are given for accomplishment of the tasks and filling in answer sheets.
Reading – duration: 60 minutes. This block includes 3 texts (the volume of each text is 500-600 words) and accomplishment of 12 tasks to each text.
To pass to the next stage participants of the olympiad should score not less than 45 points.
The 2nd stage – writing the essay. Completion time – 60 minutes; volume – not less than 200 words. Participants will be offered the topics for writing the essay in which they should express their points of view (I agree/disagree completely/partly). In order to pass to the next stage the following skills will be considered: creative approach, originality, balanced content, clearness of the stated thoughts and lack of serious grammatical mistakes.
The 3rd tour – TED Talks. Performance time – 5 minutes. Participants of the olympiad should prepare a performance in the form of the TED–project. The theme will be announced later.
The main requirements for presentation of TED–projects are the following: level of proficiency in public speaking, originality of material, distinction and creativity of a topic. The material of the performance can be followed by slides, presentation, music, etc.
