Round table “Nevada-Semey, Chernobyl: a look through the years”


On April 20, 2018 in the second building, at the Department of MA&LS KSTU was held a round table on “Nevada-Semey, Chernobyl: a look through the years”.

The purpose of the event is to show the youth the importance of the environmental tragedy on the example of the Chernobyl accident and the consequences of nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk test site. Special attention was paid to the topics of environmental education of the younger generation, the formation of responsible attitude to nature and the development of environmental thinking.

The moderator of the round table was professor of Department MA&LS KSTU Yury Obukhov.

The theme of the round table was not chosen by chance. On 26 April, the world celebrates the anniversary of the industrial disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. These events and their echoes have not been forgotten up to present days.

The round table was attended by honored guests: Margulan Khamiyevich Khamiev– Chairman of the movement “Nevada–Semey; Omarov Yerssaiyn Kussainovich – Chairman of the Commission of Military-Patriotic and Mass Defense work of the City Council of veterans; Tazabekov Aset Nurmukhanovich – Deputy head of the Department of Natural resources and environmental governance; head of NGO “Ecomuseum” Kalmykov Dmitry Evgenyevich; specialists of “EKOEKSPERT” LLP, Sukhorukov Gennady Viktorovich – head of the Association of professional environmentalists of  Karaganda, Zholmagambetov Nurbek Rysbekovich – head of the Department MA&LS and teachers, students and graduates of KSTU.

Opening the roundtable, Vice rector for Education Affairs Nazym Amangazievna Alpyssbayeva noted the importance of such events in the framework of the program “Rukhani zhangyru” of the project “Tugan zher”, the need of systematic work on preventing similar disasters in the future.

In their speeches, the guests of the round table told about the tragic events of April 1986, which turned the fate of many people; about their activities in this area and the results of large – scale events within the movement “Nevada-Semipalatinsk”. The opinion of the active public was presented by Margulan Khamievich Khamiev, who spoke about the history of the Chernobyl disaster and the emergence of the international anti – nuclear movement “Nevada-Semipalatinsk”, presented interesting information on nuclear power, the consequences of explosions, the harmful effects of radiation pollution on human health.

After the presentation of the experts, the students majoring in “Life Safety”, “Biotechnology”, graduates majoring in “Safety and environmental protection”, expressed their opinion on what the consequences are waiting for the population of the planet, if humanity does not correct the situation with environmental pollution.

The experts were asked questions to which they gave detailed explanations. Each of them expressed their opinion on the current situation regarding the environmental situation not only in Kazakhstan but also in the world as a whole.

At the end of the round table the results were summed up, all invited guests were thanked 00for their participation with the presentation of letters of appreciation.
